The Greenwich High School girls varsity tennis team has been practicing hard all year to prepare for the upcoming season, starting March 25th following tryouts. The team has taken on many team activities to strengthen their game. Their biweekly two-hour training sessions on the court together and conditioning off the court has allowed for great progress within all current members of the team. Although they only had two seniors leave the team last year, there is still room for the current freshman and returning players from JV-A and JV-B to obtain spots on the competitive team.

Reflecting on last year, the team demonstrated great strength and tennis abilities when they made it to the quarterfinals in the FCIAC after beating the number 1 seed, Glastonbury. Coach Julie Shropshire, the girls’ varsity tennis coach, took on all new players last year, except for one returning player. She has encouraged the girls to continue playing throughout the year and recently held a meeting for both returning and new girls interested in playing for the varsity team. They discussed tryouts, merch, and a possible tennis training weekend away for the varsity team once the season begins; all things that got the girls both excited and nervous for the spring season.

Courteney Sheets and Kylie Finkelstein, this year's tennis captains, alone demonstrate the fantastic skill set that the team will have this year. Sheets played 4th singles last year, beating her opponents with her powerful serve and consistency. She is optimistic for the season, as is the rest of the team. Finkelstein exclaimed “Courteney and I are very excited for the upcoming season. Everyone has been practicing so hard and have improved so much since last season. We’re excited to see so many returning players and new players going out for the team; we definitely have a shot at FCIAC’s and maybe even states!”

The girls are looking forward to getting back on the court to represent their school and are hoping for another great tennis season. Their hard work and commitment to the game will shine through in the spring. If interested, tryouts for the girl’s tennis team will begin on Saturday, March 19th.
